Robert J. Lasher collection of John J. Peck papers, 1851-1852.

Summary: Collection consists of three items relating to General John James Peck. The first is a printed form letter to Peck dated December 1, 1851 requesting military bounties in the form of land for soldiers who served in the Mexican War. The second item is a handwritten letter addressed to Majors H.L. Kendrick and John Peck primarily concerning the Treaty of Canyon de Chelly between the United States and the Navajo nation. The letter, written by Richard Hanson Weightman, requests information about an incident in the career of John S. Calhoun and the negotiation of the treaty. The third item is an undated newspaper clipping on the dedication of a memorial to General Peck.

Richard Hanson Weightman served as an officer in the Mexican War. He settled in New Mexico in 1849, and in 1850 he was chosen as a United States senator during New Mexico's unsuccessful application for statehood.
